Benefits: | | My son attends a preschool with many mulberry trees on the grounds. These trees drop large amounts of pollen right on the children during parts of the year. He would begin to itch all over and develop red splotches on his face. The pediatrician prescribed Singular each night and it has alleviated all his symptoms. |
Side effects: | | We have not seen any side effects. He is not even made sleepy by this antihisitamine. |
Comments: | | One tablet disolved in mouth before bed. He dislikes the taste, but we solve that by taking his gummy vitamins immediately after the Singular. |

At first I didn't realize that these thoughts and feelings of depression were connected to Singulair. After hearing about possible side effects on the News I stopped taking Singular, whiched ended the severe depression. |
Comments: | | In the begining Singulair seem to work well controlling my allergies, however I slowly developed strong depression side effects. I've never had problems with depression before. The effects of the drug were slow and hard to notice any day to day change. However all depression side effects ended immediately when I quit taking Singulair. I'll never take this drug again. |

Condition / reason: | | Asthma, Allergies |
Dosage & duration: | | 10 mg per day taken once a day for the period of 6 years |
Other conditions: | | severe asthma, environmental allergies, depression |
Other drugs taken: | | inhaled cortisteroids, antihistamines, ssri | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | some reduction in lung inflammation |
Side effects: | | Severe mood swings, depression, frequent lung infections |
Comments: | | I took singulair for years before I realized that it was not really doing much and I strongly suspect that it contributed to my severe depression and mood swings. I have always had severe asthma and allergies and was hospitalized many times as a youngster. I did have allergy shots which I truly think helped with my allergies. When I got older, and inhaled cortisteroids were invented I started taking them, along with Singulair. I was told that it was the "most benign medication that I was on" so I never thought twice about popping that small pill each day. I suffered from frequent chest infections - that is a side effect of the singulair since it blocks the leuketrines that react and cause inflammation. When I was 25, I started having severe mood swings and had to start taking an anti-depressant. I continued the singulair without any thoughts. However, after my third child, we were broke and I was trying to cut some medications down to save money and I stopped the singulair for a while. I did notice that my asthma got worse so I figured oh well, have to start the Singulair again, that's when I started having the severe mood swings again. I started doing some research online and read an article written by a mother who lost her son to suicide and attributed it to the singulair. In my heart of hearts, I truly believe that more attention should be given to this drug, and it's affects on the brain. I am no longer taking it and I am having much better luck with zyrtec. |

Dosage & duration: | | 1 tablet taken once per day for the period of over a year |
Other conditions: | | depression, high blood pressure, diabetes |
Other drugs taken: | | effexor, benicar, metformin, | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | noticed a significant improvement in exercise induced asthma/shortness of breath. Also I previously had a chronic cough/throat irritation prior to taking singulair and this is now gone. My asthma would act up when I drink or eat cold foods and this is no longer a problem. I haven't had bronchitis in over a year and would usually get 3-4 x year. |
Side effects: | | Did not notice any side effects. There are reports of depression as side effects but since I suffer from depression anyway it's hard to tell. Haven had any worsening of depression since starting singulair. |
Comments: | | Singulair has been very beneficial in controlling my asthma and bronchitis. Do not notice it helps much with my allergies though. I do take zyrtec for allergies but if I run out and still taking the singulair my allerties come right back. When I miss a dose of singulair I notice my cough comes back right away. |

Benefits: | | There were no benefits, only bad side effects in that the drug significantly worsened my ability to breath. |
Side effects: | | Shortness of breath, weakness. |
Comments: | | Singulair was intended to address my Asthma and constant coughing due to allergic asthma; instead Singulair made my symptoms much worse. Singulair significantly increased shortness of breath and fatigue--even during inactivity. Due to the worsening of symptoms, I only took Singulair for two days. Unfortunately, it took a few months before I was able to get back to my baseline (where I was prior to taking the drug). |

Effectiveness: | | Marginally Effective |
Side effects: | | Severe Side Effects | | Treatment Info |
Condition / reason: | | chronic hives |
Dosage & duration: | | 1 tablet daily taken once daily before bed for the period of one month |
Other conditions: | | none |
Other drugs taken: | | none | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | The benefits of the treatment was that the hives that had been present for a minimum of three years were beginning to clear up. The chronic itchiness that was associated with the hives also began to lessen. The greatest benefit of taking Singular was that the overall hyper-sensitivity of my skin was finally beginning to lessen. |
Side effects: | | The side effects of the treatment was extreme tiredness. This antihistamine caused me to fall asleep at odd times throughout the day. I am generally a high energy person but Singular caused me to fall asleep almost as soon as I sat down or stopped moving. |
Comments: | | After many tests and a variety of test treatments my dermatologist determined a course of Singular would be the best course of treatment for the chrnic hives I was suffering from.
I began taking it as per his instructions (one tablet nightly before bed). Within a matter of 2 days I began to feel incredibly tired. By day 5 I found I was falling asleep at odd times throughout the day.
I called the dermatologists office and was told to expect some tiredness and to continue with the treatment.
At the end of one month the tiredness still hadn't subsided. I returned to the dermatologists office and informed him I could no longer tolerate the side effects.
He stopped the treatment of Singular. |

Other conditions: | | bipolar, low thyroid, seasonal allergies, |
Other drugs taken: | | Premarin, Levothyroxin, Prozac, Wellbutrin XL, Claritin, Lamictal, Albuterol inhaler | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | Singulair is very effective in keeping my asthmatic symptoms in control. If I forget to take it, I can tell that my breathing becomes more labored by about 36 hours after the last dose. I will on occasion (maybe 1-2 times per week) need to use my rescue inhaler (albuterol), but it is primarily needed to ease discomfort and not to stop a full blown asthma attack. In fact, I have not suffered a full blown asthma attack since I started taking Singulair. |
Side effects: | | There are no apparent side effects of Singulair for me. |
Comments: | | My asthma had become so bad that when I was to be administered a test where I would be exposed to irritants to guage the severity of my asthma, I did not even get past the saline control before my breathing was adversely affected. I would say that my experience with Singulair has been superior (only surpassed by Advair, which I had to stop using due to the fact that my insurance company wouldn't cover it anymore. That led to my change to Singulair.) |

Comments: | | This drug is poison and should not be given to children. My daughter was prescribed this for mild asthma. Doctors don't know or don't care about the dangerous, life-threatening side effects of this drug. This is Merck's biggest money maker. There are much more effective, less dangerous treatments for asthma. Spread the word. Get active. |

Benefits: | | Nearly complete resolution of severe intractable cough and mucus obstruction of bronchi, which had been resistant to multiple treatments including inhalers, oral high dose prednisone, and antihistamines. |
Side effects: | | No adverse side effects. |
Comments: | | After reading the blogs, it's certain that we are all very different in our responses to treatment. I had failed all the standard treatments, including high oral doses of prednisone. I was facing a life on a ventilator with a tube in my throat. Within a few days of starting this medication, I could breath. Actually breath. You who have had severe asthma know how wonderful air can be. Within a week, I went for a walk. Hadn't been able to for almost a year. No depression. Actually, I feel pretty darned happy. |
